Meet Our Director

Sean Hickey DPT

It was while recovering from a severe ankle injury as a high school basketball player that Sean decided a career in physical therapy was right for him. During his rehabilitation, he worked with a caring physical therapist and witnessed first-hand how a personalized treatment program can help patients achieve their goals. From there, Sean began his higher education at Rutgers University–New Brunswick, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science. He then received his Doctor of Physical Therapy from Rutgers School of Health Professions, graduating with four honors for demonstrating excellence in academics, research, service, and clinical practice.

While at Rutgers, Sean worked as a teaching assistant for a neuroscience course and served as a board member for a free community clinic provided by the school. He was also a personal trainer for two years for Rutgers Recreation, supervisor for the intramural sports program, and spent time as a research assistant for a product being developed as a component of a virtual reality game for stroke rehabilitation. Sean went on to join the Twin Boro team as a staff physical therapist at the Parlin location before eventually being promoted to Clinical Director of the Edison clinic. Over the years, Sean has also taken a number of continuing education courses from Great Lakes Seminars, including those that emphasize manual therapy techniques to progress range of motion and drive patients towards their functional goals.

Sean treats a variety of patients of all ages, but has a particular interest in outpatient orthopedics, sports injuries, and patients with vertigo or dizziness/balance issues. He takes the time to learn what his patients are looking to get out of physical therapy and designs treatment plans that are individualized to their needs. Sean uses a hands-on approach to ensure every patient receives a healing touch during each treatment session. He also dedicates himself to constantly reading and staying updated on the latest research, which helps him continuously provide treatments that are evidence-based. Sean likes to think of himself as the coach guiding the patient through the rehabilitation process, modifying interventions accordingly, and encouraging them every step of the way.

During each treatment program, Sean utilizes Twin Boro’s One2FourTM Care Model to determine the “right level of healthcare” for each patient. This unique approach guides the rehabilitation process and looks at the entire episode of care for each individual, showing them ahead of time where this process will take him or her. The model accounts for the relatively low level of function a patient might experience after an injury or surgery, and then aims to take them all the way through to the peak performance required to return to their prior or preferred level of function. Every exercise and intervention that Sean uses is intended to help each patient get back to this level, and although the specific approach varies, each treatment is individualized to the patient’s needs.
