Strulowitz & Gargiulo-Twin Boro Physical Therapy at RWJ Barnabas Clara Maass Medical Center (CMMC) has been providing rehabilitation services at this outpatient department since 2016, when Strulowitz & Gargiulo Physical Therapy expanded its network to a fourth location. Committed to providing the best physical therapy and occupational therapy in Belleville with a broad scope, the department features an extensive pediatric therapy staff that treats young patients from newborn to adolescent age, as well as a hand therapy department that includes an occupational therapist and Certified Hand Therapist. CMMC is also one of the leading joint replacements centers in New Jersey, performing approximately 300 replacement procedures each year. This close proximity allows patients to begin their recovery immediately after surgery, thereby increasing their chances of a successful outcome.
In 2019, Strulowitz & Gargiulo Physical Therapy partnered with Twin Boro Physical Therapy, which has been providing residents of New Jersey with exceptional rehabilitation services since 1980. As the largest private practice in the state with 27 convenient locations in 10 counties, Twin Boro Physical Therapy prides itself on allowing anyone in need to access their superb care, regardless of where they live. This partnership brings together two highly regarded practices that are run by experts in the field, as many physical therapists at both clinics have more than 25 years of experience. In effect, the Strulowitz & Gargiulo-Twin Boro Physical Therapy union will afford even more patients the chance to receive the highest-quality treatment in a comfortable setting with a dedicated team that is committed to improving their function, abilities, and quality of life.
MY HOBBIES: Skiing, running, and spending time with my family, including three grandchildren, especially during summers at the Jersey Shore.
Carl Gargiulo’s 40-year career as a physical therapist started with his lifelong love of sports and a desire to help others remain as active as possible in their daily life endeavors, whether that’s on the playing field or around one’s home. His interest in the field led him to New York University, where he obtained his BS in Physical Therapy, and later his MA in Pathokinesiology. Carl eventually went on to further his education by completing his Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey.
Carl began working with the late Dan Strulowitz after graduating from NYU, and they went on to become partners, opening Strulowitz & Gargiulo Physical Therapy in 1984. He remained owner and president of the practice for his entire career before partnering with Twin Boro Physical Therapy in 2019. Carl has worked closely with patients of all ages and ability levels, from pediatrics to geriatrics, but has extensive experience and specializes in orthopedics, sports medicine and injuries, isokinetics, functional capacity evaluations, and work-related injuries. Over the past 10 years, he’s coordinated with local hospital outpatient departments to develop cancer rehabilitation programs. He’s also worked to improve the safety of older adults with regular fall prevention lectures that highlight the importance of mobility and independence.
Carl has been certified as an Orthopedic Clinical Specialist (OCS) by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties and serves as an adjunct instructor at the Columbia University Program in Physical Therapy. He regularly provides lectures at Columbia related to foot and ankle injuries, and has offered instruction on the entire orthopedic curriculum over the years, primarily focused on orthopedic assessments, intervention, and manual therapy.
With the partnership between Strulowitz & Gargiulo Physical Therapy and Twin Boro Physical Therapy that began in 2019, Carl has been able to continue working towards his vision of providing the best quality care to as many patients as possible. As clinic director of Strulowitz & Gargiulo-Twin Boro Physical Therapy at RWJ Barnabas JCMC and CMMC, he will be using the new resources available to him to improve and update the services offered with the goal of further optimizing and simplifying the patient experience. His treatment method is focused on assisting patients as they progress through the entire continuum of care, from impairment, to function, and finally to participation, which correlates directly with Twin Boro’s One2FourTM Care Model to determine the “right level of health care” for each individual. Through his educational background and teaching experience, he also makes it a primary focus to incorporate evidence-based principles into his daily practice in all treatment decisions.
As one of the leading physical therapy clinics in Belleville, the staff is committed to using only the latest evidence-based principles through treatment programs that are personally tailored to each patient based on their abilities and goals. Strulowitz & Gargiulo-Twin Boro Physical Therapy at RWJ Barnabas CMMC treats a variety of injuries and disorders that affect movement, function, and participation in daily life, and offers several preventative interventions that reduce the risk for accidents and injuries. It also collaborates with CMMC to offer a number of voluntary programs designed to improve health education and encourage an active lifestyle for all patients and community members who participate. Conditions treated and services provided include the following:
Strulowitz & Gargiulo-Twin Boro Physical Therapy at RWJ Barnabas CMMC prides itself on optimizing the patient experience, which starts and ends with the use of a one-on-one approach. From the initial evaluation all the way through discharge, its Belleville physical therapists work closely with each patient and guide every step of their recovery process so that they understand how their treatment plan works and are prepared for what to expect along their journey back to full strength and function.
