Frequently Asked Questions about Ankle Sprains

What is an ankle sprain?

An ankle sprain is when the band of tissue, or ligament, that holds the ankle joint together is overstretched or torn. This typically happens when the foot twists beyond the normal range of motion. The most common ligaments in the ankle to be torn are the ligaments on the outer side of the ankle. Inner ligaments are less commonly injured or torn.

How do you know if you have sprained your ankle?

When you sprain your ankle, you will likely have immediate swelling and pain at the site. This is because the ligament in the ankle has stretched or torn outside of its normal physiological ability. In addition to pain and swelling, you will often feel symptoms such as throbbing, stiffness, weakness, and instability. Your ankle may feel as though you are not able to walk on it and be tender to the touch. If you have torn the ligament, a popping or snapping sound or sensation is common.

Ankle sprains are typically classed into 3 grades:

·       Grade 1: This is when the ligament in the ankle is overstretched.

·       Grade 2: This is when the ligament is partially torn or severely overstretched.

·       Grade 3: This is when the ligament is completely torn.

How long do ankle sprains take to heal?

Ankle sprains take between 2 to 8 weeks typically to heal depending on the severity. If severe, full functionality can take up to a year to return. It is important to recover as much strength as possible before returning to physical sports or activity. Reinjuries are common, and physical therapy is an important tool to decrease the chances of a repeat injury.
