What is Cold Therapy?

Cold therapy is a method of treatment that reduces blood flow to injured areas. The goal of this is to decrease inflammation and slow any inflammatory responses. This helps prevent further damage to the area, numbs sore tissues, acts as a temporary anesthetic, and slows pain responses. Ice should generally not be applied directly to the skin and there should be a thin cloth layer between the ice and area. Ice should never be applied directly to bony parts of the spine.

The best time to use cold therapy is within the first 24-48 hours after injury to the area. Generally, sports injuries should be immediately treated with ice, compression, and elevation.

Ways of Using Cold Therapy

Cold therapy can be used in many situations, but some of the most common are:

  • Immersion in cold (not freezing) water.
  • Cold pack to the injured or inflamed area for 20 minutes at a time every 4 hours. Cold packs can be made by filling plastic bags with ice or using a bag of frozen vegetables such as peas. Wrap the cold compress with a thin towel or cloth.
  • Ice massage to help reduce swelling in the area. This can be done with an ice pack or ice cube, move it in circular motions around the area for 5 minutes at a time.

What Does Cold Therapy Help?

Cold therapy helps with most cases of inflammation and swelling, but is especially useful in treating:

  • Recent traumatic injuries
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Gout
  • Sprains
  • Strains
  • Tendinitis
  • Overuse injury
  • Migraines

If you are wondering whether cold therapy is appropriate for your condition, contact one of our providers to ensure you are promoting healing to the area.
