Exercises to Help Knee Tendonitis

If you are experiencing symptoms of knee tendonitis, a trained physical therapist at Twin Boro Physical Therapy can help curate an exercise and rehabilitation plan specifically geared for your condition and symptoms. However, while physical therapy is the most efficient and effective path to recovery, at-home exercises can help to alleviate symptoms and “bridge the gap” between physical therapy sessions.

Here are three of our favorite at-home exercises. When choosing an exercise, it is important to start slowly and monitor how your body feels. You should not feel pain, and it is best to ease out of the exercise if you are experiencing continual discomfort.

Straight Leg Front Raises

  1. To begin this exercise, lie on your back with your non-injured knee bent and your foot flat on the floor. The injured leg should remain straight.
  2. Tighten the thigh muscles in the injured leg so that the back of your knee presses firmly into the floor.
  3. Lift the straight leg into the air about 1 foot, engaging the thigh muscles.
  4. Hold the leg here for 5-10 seconds, then lower gently.
  5. Repeat 10-15 times.

Towel Press

  1. Lie on your back and bend both knees over a foam roll or rolled towel.
  2. Straighten the injured leg, lifting the heels off of the ground and pressing the back of the knee into the foam roll of towel.
  3. Hold the leg straight for 5-10 seconds, then slowly lower the heel back to the ground.
  4. Repeat 10-15 times.

Half-Squat Hold

  1. Start by standing with your feet shoulder-width apart and your feet turned outwards at a 45 degree angle.
  2. Tighten your glute muscles and slowly bend the knees about half of the way to a 90-degree squat. Make sure to keep your back straight and don’t let the knees go over the toes.
  3. Hold here for 10-15 seconds then slowly straighten the legs.
  4. Repeat 5-10 times.
