Returning to Activity: Physical Therapy for a Sprained Ankle

Returning to Activity: Physical Therapy for a Sprained Ankle

In sports, an ankle sprain is one of the most common injuries athletes experience. It occurs when the ligaments stretch or tear on either side of the ankle joint. Physical therapy for a sprained ankle is to help to reduce symptoms of pain and inflammation, increase mobility, strength and proprioception and help the individual return to activity safely.

Let’s take a look at two recent studies about ankle sprains, as well as what to do if you experience this injury.

High-Intensity Interval Training May Increase Risk for Injuries

A new study, published in the Journal of Sports Medicine and Physical Fitness, found that people who engage in high-intensity interval training (HIIT) tend to be at a greater risk for injury. The researchers recommend that those who are new to HIIT workouts should seek guidance from their physician or physical therapist first. Additionally, more experienced athletes should take the time to learn proper training techniques from their physical therapist to know how to minimize preventable injuries.

“Since knee and ankle sprains and strains were the most common injuries from high-intensity interval workouts, people should do neuromuscular training —  especially those that focus on strength, jumping and balance — and pre-strengthening programs to improve flexibility before starting high-intensity interval exercises.”

New Anatomic Structure in the Ankle

A 2018 study, published in the journal Knee Surgery, Sports Traumatology, Arthroscopy, identifies a previously unknown anatomic structure in the ankle, the lateral fibulotalocalcaneal ligament (LFTCL) complex. Many individuals who suffer from a sprained ankle often complain about lingering pain, which puts them at higher risk of suffering another sprain. This newly discovered anatomic structure provides a possible explanation for chronic ankle pain post-sprain. Following a physical therapy program to Level 4 activities along the One2Four continuum decreases the risk of ankle reinjury.

Don’t Try to Walk Away from an Injury Twin Boro

Don’t Try to Walk Away from an Injury

Whether it’s softball, baseball, soccer or cheerleading, a sprained ankle is a common injury that can occur at any time during practice or a game. With most sports injuries, immediate treatment is crucial to proper healing.

Returning to activity too soon, and without proper treatment can lead to imbalances and compensations that may affect future gait and athletic performance. Rather than trying to “tough it out,” seek physical therapy for your sprained ankle to increase chances of full recovery to Level 4 activities.
