Join Us In Going Pink: Raising Awareness for Breast Cancer

Clark, N.J. (2020) – Every Friday during the month of October the Twin Boro Physical Therapy Staff Members will all be wearing PINK to bring awareness for Breast Cancer. We are asking all current, former patients, friends, to join us and wear pink every Friday during the month of October!

Importance of Early Detection and Treatment

Breast Cancer affects one in eight women (about 12%). The National Cancer Institute estimates that in 2019, 268,600 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in women in the U.S., along with 62,930 new cases of non-invasive (in situ) breast cancer. It is responsible for more female deaths in the US than any other cancer, besides lung cancer. In fact, as of January 2019, there are more than 3.1 million women with a history of breast cancer in the U.S. and about 85% are those who have no family history of the disease.

Early detection and treatment of breast cancer is the key to higher survival rates of our mothers, grandmothers, aunts, sisters and friends!

Symptoms of Breast Cancer

According to the National Cancer Institute, symptoms of breast cancer may include a lump in the breast, a change in size or shape of the breast or discharge from a nipple. Breast self-exam and mammography can help find breast cancer early when it is most treatable. Treatment may consist of radiation, lumpectomy, mastectomy, chemotherapy and hormone therapy.

Thanks to increased awareness for breast cancer, early detection and improvements in treatment options, survivorship is on the rise. Research also shows that physical exercise and activity are key factors to help breast cancer survivors regain vitality and quality of life.

Breast Cancer Rehabilitation and Prehab Q & A

Natalie Baccile Rodriques, Director of Physical Therapy – Clara Mass Medical Center, Program Director – Cancer Rehabilitation, provides a helpful Q & A for Breast Cancer Rehabilitation and Prehab patients.

What are the benefits of Cancer “Pre-hab”?

Before your surgery, your physical therapist, occupational therapist or speech therapist will:

  • Evaluate your baseline activity level and exercise tolerance, in order to establish functional goals after your surgery
  • Assess baseline measurements of your arms, which will help monitor you for early signs of lymphedema after surgery
  • Identify and treat any current impairments, which may affect or hinder your cancer treatment.
  • Develop an appropriate intervention plan of care.

Why should I attend Physical Therapy after my Breast Surgery?

Following your breast surgery, you may experience the following symptoms:

  • Post-surgical pain to shoulder, chest, back and shoulder blades
  • Fatigue and reduced endurance
  • Decreased strength and mobility of shoulder
  • Postural changes
  • Restriction of scar tissue
  • Lymphedema
  • Axillary Web Syndrome – or “cording”
  • Adhesive capsulitis or “frozen shoulder”

What are some general exercise guidelines after your breast surgery?

  • Always consult your medical doctor or surgeon prior to beginning an exercise program, especially in the presence of drains or healing sutures.
  • Maintain your functional mobility by performing normal activities of dressing, bathing, self-care, feeding and grooming with your surgical arm.
  • Avoid sharp pain during activities of daily living and during exercise.
  • Avoid sleeping on your surgical arm.
  • Range of motion and stretching exercises should be performed gently within a comfortable range.
  • Positioning your surgical arm on pillows above the level of your heart will help reduce swelling. Opining and closing your hand (fist pumps) will also help the flow of lymph fluid.

How do I make an appointment for rehab services?

Please discuss referral to rehab with your doctor and obtain an prescription for physical therapy. You may contact the Clara Maass outpatient rehabilitation department by phone at 973-450-2050 to make an appointment with Natalie Baccile Rodrigues; Doctor of Physical Therapy, Certified Lymphedema Therapist.
