What is Occupational Therapy?

The goal of occupational therapy is to help you perform the activities you want to perform. Whether it is a simple or complex task, our occupational therapists will assess your current condition and develop a tailored rehabilitation plan to help build up to the desired outcome. We treat patients of all ages and help to promote health and manage injuries, illnesses, and disabilities.

Common reasons for occupation therapy include helping people to participate fully in daily life and social situations, helping people of all ages recover from injury, and helping older adults manage physical and cognitive changes. When you seek occupational therapy, typical steps include:

  • Evaluation of your current condition
  • Development of a tailored therapeutic plan
  • Continual evaluations to adjust the training plan as needed

Our therapists will practice finding a balance between helping you manage your environment and tailoring your environment to your needs. We follow the latest scientific methods and evidence-based research, so you can feel confident we are offering the best program for recovery.

What is the difference between physical therapy and occupational therapy?

Physical therapy and occupational therapy both aim to improve quality of life, but they address different concerns. Physical therapy typically addresses pain, joint movement, strength, endurance, and large-muscle movements. Occupation therapy, however, addresses small-muscle movements, cognitive skills, visual-perceptual skills, and sensory processing.

Who is qualified to be an occupational therapist?

Occupational practice can become performed at two levels:

  • Occupational therapists (OT) must have a 4-year degree and a master’s degree from an accredited occupational therapy program.
  • Occupational therapist assistants (OTA) must have an associate’s degree from an OTA program. OTAs can carry out occupational therapy plans but cannot perform patient evaluations.

Both OTs and OTAs must have a certain amount of fieldwork training and pass a national certification exam to be licensed.
