Breast Cancer Awareness: The Role of Physical Therapy

Happy October, Twin Boro Family! This month, we bring awareness to two vital causes that impact many lives: Breast Cancer Awareness Month and National Physical Therapy Month. As we don our pink gear to honor those affected by breast cancer, we also recognize the transformative power of physical therapy in recovery. At Twin Boro Physical Therapy, we believe that education, support, and proactive care are essential for anyone navigating the challenges of breast cancer treatment.

Breast cancer is not just a statistic; it’s a reality for many of us. One in eight women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, and while we focus on women, men are not exempt from this disease, accounting for 1% of cases. In a country with over 3.8 million breast cancer survivors, many rely on physical therapy to aid in their recovery journey. This month, we highlight the importance of early detection and the pivotal role physical therapy plays in breast cancer surgery recovery.

In our blog, we explore the significance of breast cancer awareness, outline how physical therapy supports recovery from surgery, and share insights on how you can get involved this month to make a difference.

Breast Cancer Awareness: The Role of Physical Therapy

The Importance of Breast Cancer Awareness

Breast cancer is a significant health issue, and raising awareness is more important than ever! Here are some key facts to keep in mind:

  • Prevalence: Did you know that breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among women in the U.S.? Early detection can make a world of difference, and regular screenings help catch issues sooner, leading to better outcomes and survival rates.
  • Survival Rates: The good news is that when breast cancer is detected early, the five-year relative survival rate is an encouraging 99%! This highlights just how crucial it is to stay on top of regular check-ups and be aware of your own risk factors.
  • Education: One of the best ways to take charge of our health is by educating ourselves and our loved ones about breast health. Recognizing the signs and understanding risk factors are essential steps toward proactive care. Don’t hesitate to utilize valuable resources from organizations like the American Cancer Society to boost your knowledge and empower those around you!
  • Men’s Health: It’s also important to remember that breast cancer doesn’t just affect women—about 1% of breast cancer cases in the U.S. occur in men. Raising awareness for everyone is vital to foster education and awareness.

Physical Therapy and Breast Cancer Surgery Recovery

Physical therapy is a crucial component of post-surgery recovery, especially after procedures like lumpectomy or mastectomy. Patients often experience challenges such as pain, reduced range of motion, and lymphedema. This is where physical therapy can make a significant difference. Here are three ways physical therapy can aid in breast cancer surgery recovery:

Enhancing Range of Motion

After surgery, patients may find it difficult and painful to lift their arms or perform everyday activities. Physical therapy exercises are specifically designed to restore movement and alleviate discomfort. Improving range of motion not only enhances daily living but also can impact other treatments, such as radiation.

Recommended Exercises:

  • Chest Stretch with Bent Elbows: Lying on your back with elbows pointing to the ceiling, place hands behind your head. Let your elbows fall open to the sides, holding for 10 seconds. Repeat 3-5 times, 1-2 times a day.

Managing Lymphedema

Lymphedema occurs when lymph nodes are damaged or removed during surgery, leading to uncomfortable swelling. Although physical therapy may not eliminate lymphedema, it can help manage and reduce swelling by facilitating lymphatic drainage, promoting better fluid movement, and preventing infections.

Recommended Techniques:

  • Serratus Punches: Lying on your back, raise your arm to 90 degrees. Punch up towards the ceiling, relaxing the shoulder blade down. Do 10-15 repetitions, 2-3 sets, 1-2 times a day.

Alleviating Pain

Breast surgery often results in tightness and pain in the chest and underarm areas. Through targeted physical therapy, patients can work on alleviating this discomfort, improving overall quality of life. Techniques such as stretching and strengthening exercises help to ease tightness and build resilience.

Recommended Exercises:

  • Push Up with a Plus: Stand arms-length from a wall, hands at shoulder height. Lean towards the wall, push yourself away, allowing shoulder blades to spread apart. Repeat for 10-15 repetitions, 2-3 sets, 1-2 times a day.

Emotional Support and Wellness

Physical therapy is not just about physical recovery; it also offers emotional support. Engaging with a physical therapist can provide patients with the encouragement and motivation needed during recovery. The journey after a breast cancer diagnosis can be overwhelming, and having a supportive healthcare team makes a significant difference.
