Meet Our Director

Joseph Colasurdo, PT, DPT, OCS

Bio

Joe Colasurdo was first exposed to physical therapy when he found himself dealing with frequent skateboarding injuries earlier in his life, and this experience led him to pursue a career in the field. He attended Connecticut College, where he double majored to earn Bachelor of Arts in Biology and Psychology in 2015, and where he was also a member of the swim team for four years. Joe then enrolled at the Duke University School of Medicine, earning a Doctor of Physical Therapy in 2018.

Joe began his physical therapy career working as a home health physical therapist and outpatient orthopedic physical therapist for underserved rural counties in North Carolina for two years. In July of 2020, he joined the Twin Boro Physical Therapy team as a staff physical therapist at the Ironbound Newark location for about one year, then moved on to assistant director at the West Orange clinic for another year before assuming the position of clinic director at the Millburn location.

With a background in psychology, Joe considers himself to be a “psychologically-informed physical therapist” who understands that pain, disability, and loss of function have a multifactorial impact on the patient. He sees each patient as an individual as opposed to someone with an injured body part, and his treatment approach reflects this understanding by treating the whole person. Joe is skilled at managing patients of all types, but he specializes in sports medicine, post-surgical recovery, vestibular/balance therapy, chronic pain, and Parkinson’s disease therapy. He has received a certification in functional dry needling and is board certified by the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) in orthopedics, making him an orthopedic clinical specialist (OCS). Joe has also taken various continued education courses in dry needling, chronic pain, foot/ankle management, vestibular therapy, and Parkinson’s therapy, among other topics, and is a published author.

Joe ensures that all his treatment strategies are based on Twin Boro Physical Therapy’s One2Four™ Care Model. He uses the model as a guideline for helping patients make meaningful short-term goals that evolve into long-term goals, which allows patients to do things they may not have thought were possible before starting physical therapy.

Hobbies

Outside of the office, Joe is an avid mountain biker, snowboarder, and surfer, and he enjoys spending time with his wife Emily and Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Lily.

My therapist Ed is awesome. He's always making sure I'm doing ok while helping me through the pain of bending my knee. It's torture.... But, No pain No gain. The staff is amazing.

This isn't my first time with this team — they also helped me recover from a triceps surgery last year, so when I herniated a few discs in my lower back, I knew exactly where to go. Anne, my main therapist, has been amazing both times. She took the time to understand this injury specifically and guided my recovery step by step, adjusting the program as I progressed. On the days Anne wasn't available, Roman and Carol stepped in seamlessly — both just as knowledgeable and attentive, so I never felt like I lost momentum in my treatment. You won’t go wrong with either of them. The PTA team — Matt, Michelle, Mark, Albert, Darius (doesn’t work here anymore) and a couple more whose names I don’t want to misspell - genuinely deserve special mention. They're very attentive, friendly, and always there to help, whether it's correcting your form, encouraging you through the tough reps, or just checking in on how you're feeling. Honestly, it feels like family in there, and that made a real difference on the harder days of recovery. Front desk staff Michael and Karen made scheduling a breeze every visit, and Keira on the insurance side was a huge help getting authorizations and billing sorted, which took a lot of stress off my plate. Two injuries, one team I trust completely. Highly recommend if you need a Physical Therapy team that focuses and is dedicated to your recovery in the right way!
Response from the owner:Hi, thank you for your kind words! We're thrilled to hear you had a positive experience. Our team works hard to provide the best possible care, and it's great to see that it shows.
