Exercises for TMJ disorders

The TMJ, or temporomandibular joints, are the joints that connect your jaw to your skull. When these joints become inflamed or misaligned, you may experience pain and discomfort when opening and closing the mouth. Injuries, arthritis, inflammation, overuse, or other conditions may contribute to this discomfort. 

TMJ disorders are typically characterized by pain when chewing, ear pain, face pain, jaw pain, neck pain, clicking or popping sounds, grating feelings, jaw locking, and/or headaches. TMJ exercises relieve these symptoms through a variety of methods, including strengthening, stretching, and relaxing the jaw. While a trained physical therapist is essential to ensure your exercises are curated for your needs, the following exercises are often recommended for at-home pain reduction and movement improvement:

  1. Relaxing the jaw: Place the tongue on the roof of the mouth behind your front teeth and relax the jaw muscles. Your teeth should come apart.
  2. Partial goldfish exercise: With the tongue on the roof of your mouth, place one finger in front of the ear on the TMJ and another finger on the chin. With mild resistance, open and close the jaw halfway. 
  3. Full goldfish exercise: With the tongue on the roof of your mouth, place one finger in front of the ear on the TMJ and another finger on the front of the front of the chin. With mild resistance, open and close the jaw to full range of motion. 
  4. Chin Tucks: Sit straight. Keeping the torso steady, pull the chin back into your neck to create a double chin.
  5. Resisted opening and closing of the mouth: Use your hand to hold the chin and gently resist opening and closing the mouth.
  6. Opening and closing the jaw: Keep the tongue on the roof of the mouth and open and close the jaw.
  7. Sideways jaw movement: Starting with the teeth about 1 cm or less apart, move the jaw from side to side. Gradually open the jaw wider and continue the same movements.
