Upper back foam rolling

Foam rolling is a great way to loosen the upper (thoracic) spine area. To perform this movement, follow these steps:

  1. Lie on your back and place your hands behind your head and the foam roller under your upper back (the foam roller should be perpendicular to your body).
  2. Gently move your body up and down by using your legs to push and pull the body back and forth. Your back should roll over the foam roller from mid back to the top of your shoulders. Keep the core tight
  3. Perform this movement for 20 seconds

Foam roller mobilization

  1. Have the foam roller placed vertically under your back so it runs along the length of the spine between the shoulder blades.
  2. Place the feet on the ground on either side to help balance your body.
  3. Raise your arms into a ‘Y’ position and let them gently fall to the ground. You can also put the hands behind the head and let the elbow fall.
  4. Take 5 deep breaths.

Doorway chest stretch

  1. Stand in front of a doorway and extend the arms to a T position at shoulder height.
  2. Take a step forward, keeping the arms in a T position until your arms come in contact with the door frame (the door frame should hit somewhere in your lower arms).
  3. Take another step forward through the doorway until you feel a stretch across your chest and the front of your shoulders.
  4. Hold this position for 30 seconds. 

If this stretch is uncomfortable, you can modify it by bending the arms or lowering the level of the arms. Feel free to play around with exercises and stretches to find what works best for your body.
