Aquatic exercise is a great way to reduce the weight of the body on the joints and allow for more comfortable movements. This is especially effective for patients with arthritis. Next time you are at your community pool or local body of water, consider the following movements:

Forward and backward walks

Enter waist to chest-height water. Gently walk forward and backward. For an added challenge, increase speed.

Forward Lunges

Enter waist to chest-height water near a wall or other sturdy surface. Take a large step forward and bend the front knee, moving into a lunge position. Push off the front foot to return back to standing position. Repeat on both sides.

Side walks

Enter waist to chest-height water near a wall or other sturdy surface. Face the wall and walk sideways in one direction and then the other. Keep the toes pointed toward the wall. 

Front Kicks

Enter waist to chest-height water near a wall or other sturdy surface. Hold the surface with one of your hands out to the side. Kick one leg forward, then lower the leg back to starting position. Repeat on each leg. 

Side kicks
