Common wrist and hand injuries

Certified Hand Therapy in New Jersey: Expert Treatment for InjuriesWrist and hand injuries are common, especially in older adults. As we age and falls become more common, many injuries in this area are caused by putting our hands and wrists out to catch ourselves. When we do this, we can put acute stress on delicate structures, causing strain or fracturing in the area. Outside of acute injury, overuse injuries are common in the hands and wrists. We use our hands and wrists for many everyday movements, often repetitively. This can lead to inflammation, irritation, and long-term symptoms.

While we see many patients with varied injuries and symptoms, several of the most common conditions we treat at Twin Boro Physical Therapy include:

Wrist tendinitis: Wrist tendinitis is a type of overuse injury in which at least one of the tendons in the wrist becomes inflamed and irritated. This leads to symptoms such as radiating pain (often radiating toward the elbow), pain on the outside or inside of the wrist, stiffness of the wrist, swelling in the hands and wrists, tenderness around the forearm and wrist, and limited movement ability. It is important to treat symptoms early, as delayed treatment can lead to chronic tendinopathy. This is common in tennis players, keyboard players, construction workers, and others who perform repetitive movements of the wrist. It is also common in elderly adults or those more at risk of falling.

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS): When a nerve in the wrist becomes pinched, carpal tunnel syndrome can result. This leads to symptoms such as weakness, pain, numbness, or tingling in the wrists and hands. People who frequently type on keyboards, play racquetball or tennis, sew frequently, or perform other repetitive find motor movements are at a higher risk of this condition.

Trigger finger: Trigger finger is a condition in which fingers or thumbs become stuck in a bend position.

De Quervian’s Tenosynovitis: This condition leads to pain where the thumb and the wrist connect. Repetitive motion typically causes this condition.

Arthritis: Arthritis is often caused by wear and tear or the joints in the wrists and hands. This type of arthritis is osteoarthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis, on the other hand, is caused by an autoimmune disease. Arthritis often leads to swollen and painful joints and can cause loss of function in the hands and wrists.

Wrist sprains: Wrist sprains are caused by the ligaments in the wrist tearing once stretched beyond their normal capacity. Often a popping, tearing, or snapping feeling is felt, followed by warmness, tenderness, swelling, and difficult movement.

Wrist strain: A wrist strain is caused by muscle or other soft tissues connecting the muscles and bones becoming injured leading to swelling, bruising, and stiffness.
