Exercises for Shoulder Injuries

Shoulder injuries can be caused by a variety of factors, including overuse, trauma, and degenerative conditions such as osteoarthritis. Physical therapy can play a critical role in the management of shoulder injuries by reducing pain, improving mobility and strength, and preventing future injuries.

One of the most effective physical therapy treatments for shoulder injuries is therapeutic exercise. Exercise can help improve strength and flexibility in the muscles surrounding the shoulder joint, which can reduce pain and improve function. Some exercises that can be effective in treating shoulder injuries include:

  • External rotations with a resistance band: This exercise is performed by holding a resistance band with one hand and standing with your arm at your side, elbow bent at a 90-degree angle. Keeping your elbow close to your side, slowly rotate your forearm away from your body until your hand is parallel to the ground. Hold for a second, then slowly lower your arm back to starting position. Repeat for 10-15 repetitions on each arm. This exercise strengthens the rotator cuff muscles, which help stabilize the shoulder joint and prevent injury.
  • Shoulder blade squeezes: This exercise is performed by sitting or standing with your arms at your sides and your shoulders relaxed. Slowly squeeze your shoulder blades together, feeling the muscles between your shoulder blades engage. Hold for a few seconds, then release. Repeat for 10-15 repetitions. This exercise helps improve posture and reduce strain on the shoulder joint by engaging the muscles that support the shoulder blade.
  • Wall slides: This exercise is performed by standing with your back against a wall, arms at your sides, and palms facing forward. Slowly slide your arms up the wall, keeping your elbows and wrists in contact with the wall at all times. Once your arms are overhead, hold for a few seconds, then slowly lower your arms back down to starting position. Repeat for 10-15 repetitions. This exercise helps improve mobility and strength in the shoulder joint, as well as improve posture.
