Physical therapy for mobility and balance

Physical therapy, or PT, is a rehabilitative treatment designed to help patients reduce symptoms related to limited mobility, chronic illness, pain, functional difficulties, musculoskeletal conditions, and more. There are many subdisciplines of physical therapy, such as geriatric physical therapy, pediatric physical therapy, hand and wrist therapy, sports physical therapy, and neurological physical therapy.

In some cases, physical therapy can be designed for a specific symptom or class of symptoms. One such category of these is physical therapy for mobility and balance.

How can physical therapy improve balance?

Three systems in your body work together to provide stability and balance: your vision, your vestibular system (inner ear system), and your proprioceptive system (nerves in the feet and legs). When you seek physical therapy for improved balance, your physical therapist will determine the root cause of your balance difficulties and which system or systems are affecting your ability to balance. Based on this, they will design a specialized rehabilitation plan to help improve the function of this system.

For example, patients may practice standing on one leg, walking heel-to-toe, or standing on wobble boards. In general, patients start with simple exercises and work their way toward more complex movements.

How can physical therapy improve mobility?

Similar to physical therapy for balance, physical therapy for mobility will vary depending on the root cause of your mobility issues. In general, mobility issues step from one of four potential causes: poor posture, weak leg muscles, vestibular irregularities, and weak core muscles. Your physical therapy regimen will vary depending on which of these areas you are struggling with. In some cases, poor mobility may be a complication of another injury, following surgery, or result from a chronic illness. In each case, your physical therapist will discuss your symptoms and how physical therapy may be able to help. The overarching goal is to improve your strength, muscular balance, range of motion, and functional movements, and reduce any pain or uncomfortable symptoms.

Exercises generally start simple and progressively increase in difficulty. Your physical therapist may incorporate several types of therapy to ensure you are achieving results that exceed expectations and can be sustainable moving forward.
