Relieve TMJ pain at home

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain can be a frustrating and uncomfortable condition. There are simple exercises that you can do at home to help alleviate TMJ pain. Here are some exercises that you can try:

  1. Jaw exercises: These exercises can help stretch and strengthen the muscles that control jaw movement. One simple exercise involves placing a finger on your chin and opening and closing your mouth, gently resisting the pressure of your finger with your jaw muscles. Another exercise involves placing a tongue depressor or a pencil between your front teeth and moving your jaw up and down, gently resisting the pressure of the object with your jaw muscles.
  2. Neck stretches: These stretches can help alleviate tension in the neck muscles, which can contribute to TMJ pain. One simple stretch involves tilting your head to one side, gently pulling your ear towards your shoulder with your hand, and holding the stretch for 30 seconds. You can then repeat the stretch on the other side.
  3. Tongue exercises: These exercises can help improve tongue and jaw alignment, which can alleviate TMJ pain. One simple exercise involves placing your tongue on the roof of your mouth and slowly opening and closing your mouth, keeping your tongue in the same position.
  4. Relaxation exercises: These exercises can help reduce stress and tension, which can contribute to TMJ pain. One simple relaxation exercise involves finding a quiet place to sit or lie down, closing your eyes, and taking slow, deep breaths for several minutes. You can also try visualization techniques, such as imagining yourself in a peaceful, relaxing environment.
  5. Moist heat or ice therapy: Moist heat or ice therapy can help reduce pain and inflammation in the jaw. For moist heat therapy, you can apply a warm, damp towel or washcloth to the affected area for 10-15 minutes at a time, several times a day. For ice therapy, you can apply a cold compress or a bag of frozen peas to the affected area for 10-15 minutes at a time, several times a day.

It’s important to note that while these exercises can be helpful in alleviating TMJ pain, they should be done under the guidance of a healthcare professional. If your TMJ pain persists or worsens, it’s important to consult with your dentist or doctor to determine the best treatment options for your individual needs.
