Make a fist

Anytime your hand feels stiff, this is a simple exercise to stretch and move many structures in your hand at once. To start, follow these steps:

  1. Hold your affected hand out with all fingers extended.
  2. Slowly curl your hand into a fist with your thumb on the outside of the fist. Be gentle, there is no need to squeeze your hand.
  3. Release the fist and extend the fingers once more.
  4. Repeat 10 times.

Finger bends

  1. Start with your affected hand in front of you and extend all fingers.
  2. Bend your thumb towards the center of your palm and count to five. Return the thumb to its original position.
  3. Next, bend your index finger towards the center of your palm and then return it to its original position.
  4. Repeat with your middle, ring, and pinky fingers.
  5. Repeat the entire sequence 3 to 5 times.

Thumb bends

  1. Start in the same position as the other exercises, with all five fingers extended.
  2. Bend the thumb and bring it to the center of your palm.
  3. Try to stretch your thumb all the way to the base of your pinky finger. If you cannot go that far, go as far as you are able.
  4. Hold for 2-5 seconds and then return to the starting position.
  5. Repeat 3 times.

Make a Ring or “O”

When your hand is aching or feels stiff, this is another good way to stretch out all of the muscles and joints. To do this exercise, follow these steps:

  1. Start with all fingers extended on the affected hand.
  2. Curve all of the fingers together until they touch and form a circle or “O” shape.
  3. Hold this ring for 5 seconds and then extend the fingers back to starting position.
  4. Repeat 2-5 times.
