Hand and Wrist Splints: Resting Splint

Hand and wrist splints help to support weak or injured joints to relieve strain on surrounding structures. This helps to position the hand in such a way that the injury can heal with reduced risk of deformity or complications. Splints also help to reduce pain or deformity from other conditions, such as arthritis or carpal tunnel syndrome.

Splints can be designed for two different functions – either to support work or rest. For resting splints, you can expect a splint that is stiffer and holds the hand in a rigid position. It is normally made from hard materials with a Velcro strap to fasten it. In most cases, resting splints are used:

  • To reduce pain or strain overnight when sleeping
  • As a form of relief for pain during the day
  • To relieve symptoms from arthritis flare-ups

To put on this type of splint, you will follow these steps:

  1. Unfasten any Velcro or straps.
  2. Place the hand into the splint in such a way that the wrist and palm are in contact with the splint.
  3. Tighten the straps starting with the strap nearest your elbow. The straps should be tight enough that your wrist feels supported but not so tight that you lose circulation to the hand.

To take off the splint, you will first undo the straps and then slide the hand out of the splint, trying to avoid movements of the wrist that cause pain.
