Hand and Wrist Splints: Working Splints
Splints help to provide protection for weakened joints in the hands and wrist. These splints help to reposition misalignment, support injured joints, and help to relieve pain from arthritis, carpal tunnel, or other painful conditions. Depending on your daily activities, either a resting or working splint will be recommended to you.
Resting splints are generally recommended for times when you are not using your hand or wrist, such as when you are sleeping. Working splints, on the other hand, are most often recommended when you need support during activities which require use of your wrist. It’s important to follow your physical therapist’s recommendations when it comes to wearing your splint, as overwearing it can lead to stiffness in the joint.
Working splints are more flexible than resting splints and allow for most movements of the hand. Usually, working splints are made of light synthetic rubber-like materials or elastic and have Velcro straps for adjustment. There is often a metal bar inserted in the pocket on the palm side that helps to support the wrist joint. The goal is that the splint will allow you to perform the movements you need while alleviating some of the pain you might normally feel during these motions. Splints can also help to increase your grip strength and help you perform longer or more strenuous tasks. For tasks like driving, it is important to consult your physical therapist and insurance company to minimize risks.
Generally, working splints will be recommended to you if you experience swelling in the wrist or thumb, are having chronic discomfort during daily movements, or your joints are progressively feeling weaker.
