Hand Stretching Exercises for Extremely Stiff or Paralyzed Hands

If you are experiencing extreme function loss in your hands, often after a neurological event such as a stroke, hand therapy can be extremely effective in improving fine motor skills. Hand strengthening and stretching exercises can also help to prevent the worsening of arthritis and significantly reduce pain levels.

If you are looking to add in some at-home exercises to reduce extreme stiffness or ease discomfort from hand paralysis, you are in the right place. For those with complete paralysis in the affected hand, these exercises can be performed passively. This means that the unaffected hand can be used to stretch the affected hand. For those with movement abilities, the exercises can be performed actively with no assistance from the other hand.

Wrist Extension and Flexion. Place the forearm on the table and let the hand hang off the table with the palm facing the flood. Move the hand up and down, bending at the wrist. Repeat this with the palm facing up. This should be done 10 times or as many times as you are able.

Inner Arm and Wrist Stretch. Place your arm straight out in front of you with the palm facing up. Move to a wall or use your other arm and pull the fingers towards the floor as far as possible without pain (a stretching feeling is okay) and hold for 10 seconds.

Thumb slides. Open your hand with your palm facing upwards. Move your thumb to the base of your pinky finger and glide it along the base of your fingers until it reaches your index finger. From here, slide it back along the same path until it reaches your pinky finger again. Repeat 10 times.

It is important to repeat these stretches and exercises in order to build new pathways in the brain. Over time, the movement in your hands and wrists will improve and you will be able to incorporate additional exercises as well.
