Beginner Hand Therapy Exercises You Can Do At Home

Looking for some easy at-home hand therapy exercises? We’ve got you covered. These hand therapy exercises use no special equipment, only common things you can find around your home. Incorporating hand therapy movements in your daily life can create significant improvements over time, and all you need is a few minutes of your day.

Read on for our favorite at-home exercises:

  1. Wrist rolls. Place your affected hand palm-down on a table or flat surface. Use your other hand to roll the affected hand to be palm-side up, then back to palm-side down. Try to press the back and front of the hand flat on the surface (or as close as you can go) during each roll to maximize wrist mobility. Repeat 10 times.
  2. Wrist bends. Place your arm on a table or flat surface with the hand hanging off and the palm facing the floor. Gently lift the hand as much as you can while keeping the arm on the flat surface. Repeat 10 times.
  3. Bottle squeezes. Grab a water bottle, can, or another round object. Place the object in your palm, palm facing up, with your arm resting on a table or flat surface. Squeeze the round object and hold for 2-10 seconds. Repeat 5-10 times.
  4. Pen moves. Take a pen and place it on the table. Practice picking up this pen and moving it to the other side of the table, then releasing it. Repeat 5-10 times.
  5. Pen rolls. Place the pen between your thumb and index finger, then roll the pen for 30 seconds. This helps to isolate muscles in the hand.
  6. Coin drop. Place 5 coins in the palm of one of your hands. Then, using the other hand, pick up each coin individually and place it on the table.
