Hand Strengthening Exercises: Therapy Ball

If you are looking to invest in an effective and affordable at-home tool, therapy balls are a great option. Therapy balls come in different densities depending on the current strength of your hand. You can start with soft balls and gradually move up to firm therapy balls as your strength and motion improves.

The resistance of the hand therapy ball helps to place a demand on your muscle fibers and build strength in the small muscles of the hand. It also helps to improve dexterity and build functional movement skills that will improve your movement abilities in your everyday life.

Here are a few of our certified hand therapist-approved at-home exercises:

  • Whole Hand Squeeze. Place the therapy ball in the palm and squeeze the ball with all five fingers. Hold this squeeze for 2-10 seconds and repeat 5 times.
  • Thumb roll. Place the ball in the palm with your palm facing upwards. Using the thumb, gently roll the ball around your palm. Do 10 rolls clockwise and then 10 rolls counterclockwise.
  • Finger squeeze. Open your hand and spread the fingers apart. Following this, place the ball between two of your fingers (start with the index and middle fingers) and squeeze the ball between the fingers for 2 to 10 seconds. Repeat 5 times with each set of fingers.
  • Flat finger pinch. Straighten your index, middle, ring, and pinky fingers and hold them together. Place the ball between your thumb and these straight fingers and squeeze. Hold for 2-10 seconds and repeat 5 times.
  • Straight thumb roll. Place the ball in the palm with your palm facing upwards. Using the thumb, gently roll the ball up and down then side to side, trying to roll the ball in a straight line. Do 10 rolls in each direction.
