Hand Therapy Exercises: Putty

If you are looking for creative ways to incorporate hand therapy in your daily routine, hand therapy putty is a versatile tool to target different muscles within the hand and improve overall movement ability.

Here are our favorite at home exercises that can provide a comprehensive hand therapy session using only one tool—putty!

  • Finger Scissors. To do this exercise, open the hand with all five fingers spread. Place the putty between two fingers and squeeze the fingers together. Hold this for 2-10 seconds and repeat between each set of fingers.
  • Pinch. Place the putty between your thumb and fingertip (start with the thumb and index finger). Squeeze the putty between these fingers and hold for 2-10 seconds. Repeat for each finger with the thumb. If this is too difficult, you can use multiple fingers at once.
  • Grip squeeze. To target the whole hand, place the putty in your palm and squeeze with the entire hand. Imagine you have a water balloon in your hand that you are trying to pop.
  • Flat pinch. Straighten your index, middle, ring, and pinky fingers and hold them together. Place the putty between your thumb and these straight fingers and squeeze. Hold for 2-10 seconds and repeat 5 times.
  • Finger spread. Make a donut shape with the putty and put the hole over two of your fingers (such as the index and middle fingers). Press these two fingers away from each other until you feel resistance from the putty ring. Hold for 2-10 seconds and repeat with each set of fingers.
  • Whole hand spread. In a similar movement as the finger spread, make a donut with the putty and place it around all five fingers (touch all five fingers together before wrapping the putty around). Try to open the hand and use the putty as resistance. Hold for 2-10 seconds and repeat.
