Hand Therapy in Woodbridge Township, NJ

Certified hand therapy is a great way for you to reduce pain and stiffness in your hands, improve fine motor movements, and prevent future conditions of the hand and wrist. At Twin Boro Physical Therapy, you will be paired individually with a Certified Hand Therapist who will walk you through every stage of your rehabilitation journey.

By pairing our patients one-on-one with certified hand therapists, our patients and therapists are able to develop a deeper working relationship that encourages transparency, feedback, and questions. We want you to feel in control of your journey and take ownership of your recovery process. In addition to this, your therapist is able to more closely monitor the progress of your condition. If your therapist notices that one type of hand therapy is creating a positive response in your condition, they are able to adjust the care plan to incorporate more of this type of therapy. If they notice one exercise is not leading to the optimal results, they can swap that exercise for an alternate one. This maximizes your time in the clinic and leads to the best results.

Functional Movement Hand Therapy Exercises

If you struggle with small hand movements, certain daily activities can become challenging and stressful. In order to practice fine motor skills, we recommend incorporating these activities into your daily routine. These tasks are simple, functional, and very effective at training the small muscles in your hand to perform precise movements.

  1. Coin stacking. If you have loose change lying around, practice making neat piles of these coins. Try to group the coins by size and make stacks of each type of coin. This helps to improve hand coordination and fine motor skills.
  2. Clothespin pinches. Taking a clothespin, practice squeezing and opening the clothespin with each finger and your thumb. If this is painful, try using two fingers with your thumb to pinch the clothespin.
  3. Doing a puzzle. Who knew physical therapy could be fun! Puzzles help with hand coordination and finger movements. Start with a puzzle with larger pieces and gradually move to smaller pieces.
  4. Playing a board game. Another fun activity that doubles as hand therapy is playing a board game. Try to play a game that uses small pieces, such as chess or checkers, and practice your fine motor skills by moving these objects.
  5. Play piano. Learning to play piano, even very simple songs, can help with finger movements, stress, and coordination. If you don’t have a piano, you can download an app on your phone or tablet and play on that!
