Why is Hand Therapy Important?

Hand therapy is a type of physical and occupational therapy centered around conditions of the hand, wrist, elbow, shoulder or other upper extremity concerns.

The hands and wrists are one of the most complex areas of human anatomy due to the intricate structure of the muscles, joints, bones, and nerves. Injuries and pain are common in this area and proactive treatment is important to prevent long-term pain or damage. Having injuries to the hands or wrists can greatly reduce dexterity and make even the simplest tasks feel daunting. Our skilled professionals have advanced certifications in Hand Therapy and are equipped to perform thorough assessments of your symptoms and spot easy-to-miss conditions.

What Type of Treatment Can I Expect?

We pride ourselves on our one-on-one approach, which means our physical therapists will carefully craft the best individualized combination of treatment approaches for your recovery. We assess your current range of motion, mobility, strength, flexibility, pain, and body history to provide you with the best care. Your physical therapist will also ask questions about your lifestyle and schedule to design a program that fits seamlessly into your daily life. While every treatment plan will be unique, common treatment targets include exercise, splinting, reeducation, ultrasound, manual stretching, joint mobilization, heat, ice, and electric stimulation.

How Long Will Recovery Take?

Every patient is individual, and there is no standard recovery time. Your therapist will carefully create goals and milestones with you and you will be able to track your progress and stay engaged in your recovery process. Many of our patients come one or two times per week for 6-8 weeks, however, it is common for physical therapy to extend beyond this time frame. The length of your recovery will depend on the severity of the injury, time since the injury occurred, body history, age, and commitment to physical therapy. However, our motivated hand therapists will be with you every step of the way!
