Physical Therapy After Ankle Surgery
Ankle surgery can take a toll on your ability to perform even the most basic daily tasks, whether because of pain or movement limitations. Physical therapy can help you fully recover functional movement and mobility after an injury and return to sports or activities post-surgery.
Your ankle is the joint between the foot and the lower leg. It is the connection that allows you to walk and your foot to have movement. When there is an injury to this area, many of the bones and soft tissues can be affected. Usually, the first symptom is ankle pain, often followed by swelling, bruising, and weakness.
One of the most important things to do after a suspected injury is to seek diagnosis and treatment. We offer immediate scheduling through our direct access program to minimize the time between injury and treatment. Prolonging the time between injury and medical treatment can delay recovery and potentially lead to permanent or semi-permanent loss of function.
How do you treat an ankle injury?
The first thing that happens after an ankle injury is that your physician will reduce the injury, which means that will set or fix the bone in place. This helps to immobilize the injury and reduce pain, swelling, and the potential for future injury. Once it is immobilized, your physical therapist will give you an assistive device such as crutches. Once the injury is healed, you will be able to start putting weight on your ankle. You may still use crutches at this point to alleviate some of the weight on the injured area.
When you come into Twin Boro post ankle surgery, one of our physical therapists will provide a comprehensive evaluation of your ankle including the gait, range of motion, strength, inflammation, pain, scar tissue, mobility, and pain levels. After an evaluation, you can begin treatment which will likely include therapeutic exercises, ice, heat, electrical stimulation, and stretches.
How long will you need physical therapy?
Everybody’s journey is different, and your physical therapist will walk you through what to expect in each phase of the process. However, physical therapy after ankle surgery generally lasts for 6 to 8 weeks, depending on the severity of the injury and your body’s response to the therapy. Consistent at-home effort will improve the efficacy of physical therapy.
