Physical Therapy after Shoulder Surgery

After shoulder surgery, you may feel more pain in the affected area than you did before surgery. This is because surgery can cause trauma to the surrounding tissues and inflammation, and it takes time for your body to recover. However, in most cases, you will recover to much less pain and increased ease of movement compared to before surgery.

Your physical therapist will guide you through the appropriate physical therapy exercises for your specific condition. It’s important to incorporate movements that are designed to help treat and rehabilitate your specific injury and that work in tandem with your anatomy and body history. The goal of physical therapy is to regain your strength, improve your range of motion, reduce pain, and increase mobility.

Top Exercises After Shoulder Surgery

After shoulder surgery, your physical therapist will guide you through a set of motions specifically for you. However, common exercises include:

  • Shoulder elevation: Cuff your hands together in front of you and slowly lift your arms towards your head, keeping them as straight as possible. Keep your arms held for 15-20 seconds, then slowly lower.
  • Rotator cuff movement: While standing, clasp your hands behind your back and straighten the arms as much as possible. Keeping the arms straight, lift them up and down behind your back as much as possible. Repeat 5-10 times.
  • Shoulder adduction: Place a cushion between your side and your arm a little bit below the armpit. Squeeze the pillow between your side and your arm as tightly as possible. Hold for 5-10 seconds and repeat 5-10 times.
  • Forward Reach: With your arms straight out in front of you, alternate trying to reach one arm forward and then the other. Hold each reaching motion for 5-10 seconds, and repeat 5-10 times on each side.
