Everyday Physical Therapy Stretches

Many people spend 8 hours (or more!) at a desk or sitting at home; aches and pains are common. It is easy for the muscles to cramp and become stiff over time. To help relieve tension and prevent aches and pains, here are a few simple stretches to perform at home:

  1. Lying Down Hamstring Stretch
    1. Lie on your back and lift one leg, bending the knee to a 90-degree angle.
    2. Clasp your hands around the thigh of the bent leg and pull gently towards your chest. If this is too intense, wrap a towel around the back of the bent leg and pull the ends of the towel towards you.
    3. Try to straighten the bent leg as much as possible while pulling the leg towards your chest.
    4. Hold for 30 seconds and repeat on the other side.
  2. Piriformis Stretch
      1. Lie on your back and bend both knees, placing the feet flat on the ground.
      2. Put your right ankle on the left knee.
      3. Clasp your hands or loop a towel around the left thigh.
      4. Pull the left thigh/knee towards your chest and hold for 30 seconds.
      5. Repeat on the opposite side.
  3. Bench Lunge Stretch – Hip Flexor Focus
        1. Stand facing a raised surface, such as a bench or chair.
        2. Place one foot up on the bench and slowly bend the knee. Focus on feeling a stretch across the front of the opposite hip.
        3. Lean forward and hold for 30 seconds.
        4. Repeat on each side.
