Anatomy of the Knee

Knee injuries can happen to anyone, and they can significantly hinder everyday activities. The knee is the largest joint in the body and one that is more likely to be injured than many other joints.

When understanding knee injuries, it is important to look at the main structures of the knee: the bones, cartilage, ligaments, and tendons.

Bones: The main two bones of the knee joint are the shinbone (tibia) and the thigh bone (femur). The front of the joint is home to the kneecap (patella) which protects the tibia and femur. Dislocations or subluxation of the patella are common.

Meniscus: The meniscus is made of two pieces of cartilage that protect the femur and tibia by absorbing shock. These pieces of cartilage are wedge-shaped and are tough and rubbery to provide stability while still providing a cushion.

Articular Cartilage: The back of the patella, end of the femur, and end of the tibia are covered with articular cartilage to prevent friction between the bones when the leg is bent or straightened.

Tendons: Muscles and bones are connected by tendons. One of the main tendons in the knee is the quadriceps tendon. This tendon connects the quadriceps (muscles in the front of your thigh) to the patella. The patellar tendon, another main tendon of the knee, connects the patella to the tibia.

Ligaments: Bones connect to other bones by ligaments. These ligaments stabilize the joint and hold it together. In the knee, there are four main ligaments, made of the collateral ligaments and the cruciate ligaments.
