Your First Physical Therapy Appointment

When you go to your first physical therapy appointment, you may not know what to expect. This is normal, and we are here to answer all of your commonly asked questions about what to wear, what not to wear, what to expect, and general FAQs around that first appointment.

What Should You Wear?

When you show up for your first physical therapy appointment, we recommend you wear clothes in which you can move easily and demonstrate your current range of motion. If your area of concern is easily exposed, we recommend wearing clothes which allow the physical therapist to inspect the area of swelling, discoloration, and perform some range of motion tests. For example, if your area of concern is your shoulder or elbow, we recommend wearing a short-sleeved shirt or tank top. If your area of concern is your knee, we recommend wearing shorts.

After your first appointment, you therapist will discuss dress-code for your future appointments based on your proposed physical therapy regimen and your level of comfort.

What Will Happen During the First Appointment?

During your first appointment, you will be given a comprehensive assessment to diagnose the root of your symptoms and develop a care plan targeting what will be most beneficial for your condition. This includes assessments such as your current range of motion, your mobility levels, your strength, your flexibility, your pain levels, any swelling or discoloration, your body history, your anatomy, and the time since the injury or symptoms began.

In addition to this, you will be asked about your schedule, lifestyle, and preferences to tailor your plan to be sustainable within your current life. The goal is to promote longstanding results, and we are dedicated to helping you find a rehabilitation program that works for you.

Is There A Standard Care Plan?

Nope! Every patient is a unique individual, even if they have the same condition as someone else. No two rehabilitation plans will look exactly alike, and you will be paired one-on-one with a therapist who will oversee your recovery and make any adjustments needed throughout the process.
