Exercises to Choose when You Have Lower Back Pain
Part of rehabilitating your lower back pain will be to choose exercises that are beneficial to your overall physical fitness without aggravating your lower back. While your physical therapist will help you find the right exercises for you, the following exercises are generally considered to be safe options:
Walking: Gentle walking helps to strengthen the back muscles, leg muscles, and core muscles without putting excess strain on the lower back. When you are recovering from an injury or ailment, it is important to let the area heal while also strengthening the supporting structures For some, walking in water can provide one step further of relief.
Recumbent Biking: Recumbent biking is another great exercise to support the lower back muscles. This type of biking can be less strain that upright biking because it allows the spine to remain neutral instead of hunching forward. The aerobic and strength benefits of biking are maintained without the added stress.
Machine Weights: Machine weights can be a great option because it provides extra structure over the weights. However, you should still choose light weights and focus on higher rep counts to further alleviate any compression in the spine.
Modified sit-ups: Modifying exercises to protect your back can help maintain strength without aggravating your condition. For a modified sit-up, lie on your back with your knees bent and feet on the ground as you would for a normal sit-up. However, instead of raising forward and sitting up, reach your hands towards the ceiling. From here, reaching upwards and lifting the chest upwards can activate your core without putting force on the lower spinal discs.
