What does a rotator cuff conditioning program look like?

After a rotator cuff injury or surgery, completing a rotator cuff conditioning program is ideal for strengthening surrounding tissues and preventing reinjury when returning to your daily routine. In general, a well-structured conditioning routine will be designed by a physical therapist who has gone over your body history, anatomy, injury history, and symptoms. This ensures that your program is tailored to you and your needs.

While programs will vary, most condition programs are composed of several types of movements: those for strength and those for flexibility. Your physical therapist will monitor your progress and make adjustments to the program as you move through it to add in new movements or target exercises based on your response to the current treatment plan.

The strength-based exercises will be designed to strengthen the muscles that support the shoulder joint. This increases stability, relieves pain, and acts as a preventative measure for further or future injuries. Flexibility-based exercises will help to restore the range of motion of the shoulder, as well as also acting as a preventative measure for future discomfort. These movements keep the muscles flexible and improve mobility as you build strength. They also help to reduce soreness.

Several muscles will be targeted in your conditioning plan. Common muscles to target include:

  • Biceps
  • Triceps
  • Subscapularis
  • Infraspinatus
  • Supraspinatus
  • Deltoids
  • Trapezius muscles
  • Rhomboid muscles
  • Teres muscles

These muscles involve the upper arm, upper back, and shoulder muscles. By comprehensively strengthening and stretching the area, you will reduce imbalances in strength and stability that may have occurred as a result of your injury. Most conditioning programs last in between one and two months, but your physical therapist will help determine the best schedule for you. Many patients are given a maintenance program following this program to sustain results over time. This involves several at-home strengthening exercises and stretches.
