Following this, you will work with them to develop a care plan that fits into your schedule and is designed to help you achieve long-term results.

What is Sciatica?

Sciatica is the pain or discomfort caused by the sciatic nerve, which is a nerve that travels from the lower back or buttocks region down the leg. Typically, sciatica is caused from a herniated disk, overgrown bone (sometimes referred to as bone spurs), or other malformation that puts pressure on the sciatic nerve. In rare cases, a tumor may put pressure on the nerve and need removal. Diseases such as diabetes or other illnesses that lead to nerve damage can also increase risk of sciatica. This pressure on the nerve leads to inflammation, which can cause pain and numbness in the leg.

Sciatica is typically treated over the course of a few weeks, but treatments may vary depending on the cause of the nerve pressure. In some cases, surgery may be recommended.

Symptoms of Sciatica

The most common symptoms of sciatica are pain and numbness along the nerve path. This pain can range from mild to severe, and it is sometimes described as having an electric shock or jolt-like feeling. Sitting for long periods of time may aggravate symptoms. Sciatica can affect one or both sides of the body and symptoms may be different in different areas.

When Should You Seek Medical Care?

Treatment of sciatica is often noninvasive, and mild cases of sciatica generally resolve by themselves over the course of a few weeks. However, it is important to contact your medical provider if you have prolonged severe symptoms, sudden and severe pain, severe numbness or muscle weakness, or pain after a traumatic event such as an automobile accident or fall. If you have trouble controlling your bladder or bowels, you should let your medical provider know as soon as possible. In many cases, physical therapy and at-home alterations can help relieve symptoms of sciatica.
