What is Tennis Elbow?

Lateral Epicondylitis, also known as Tennis elbow, is a common overuse injury that occurs when the tendons of the elbow become inflamed. In most cases, this happens in sports with repetitive movements, such as tennis. However, while sports are one of the most common causes, Tennis elbow can result from any activity that involves repetitive use of the forearm tendons and elbow. This puts people with professions such as carpentry, painting, playing musical instruments, and plumbing at a higher risk.

Tennis elbow generally leads to pain or discomfort on the outside of the elbow. There are several ways to treat tennis elbow, and medical providers will typically prescribe a combination of noninvasive treatments, at-home rest, and physical therapy. In most cases, surgery is not necessary, however, severe cases may require it for maximum symptom reduction.

Causes of Tennis Elbow

Tennis elbow can be caused in several ways and is not exclusive to particular activities or professions. In some cases, tennis elbow develops with no known cause or repetitive movement. Some of the most common types of injuries that lead to tennis elbow include:

Overuse

Arguably the most common cause of tennis elbow is overuse. This causes injury to the ECRB, which is a muscle in the forearm that helps to stabilize the wrist when the arm is held straight. This is common in a tennis groundstroke. When this muscle is overused, microscopic tears form in the tendon, leading to pain, inflammation, and difficulty using the muscle. This muscle in particular is at increased risk for injury because it rubs against bone during movements, which can lead to wear of the muscle over time.

Sports, Professions, and Hobbies

Sports such as tennis, volleyball, golf, baseball, and cricket can lead to an increased risk of tennis elbow. In addition to this, people with occupations or hobbies such as cooking, butchering, auto working, carpentry, plumbing, painting, and playing musical instruments are at a heightened risk of developing this injury.

Aging

Tennis elbow is most common in middle-aged adults as the muscles may be weaker and the body has had more time to develop wear and tear.
