What is Arthritis?

Arthritis is very common, yet not many people really understand it. There are over 100 types of arthritis or related conditions and it can affect people of all ages. Arthritis is the leading cause of disability in the United States and affects over 50 million people, including 300,000 children.

Arthritis is typically characterized by joint pain, swelling, stiffness, and limited range of motion. Symptoms may either be consistent or “off and on.” Arthritis is most commonly caused by the loss of cartilage in the joints and can progress over time. If you notice arthritic symptoms, it’s important to seek assessment and treatment quickly to slow or stop the progression and regain as much of the affected functionality of the joints as possible. The four main types of arthritis are:

Degenerative Arthritis

This is the most common type of arthritis and develops when the cartilage at the ends of the bones wears away and the bones rub against one another. This can cause joints to become less stable or functional over time and pain to increase.

Typical ways to treat this form of arthritis include pain relievers, manual therapy, physical activity, and hot and cold therapy.

Inflammatory Arthritis

Sometimes, the immune system doesn’t work as it should. While it’s meant to protect our body, it can sometimes mistakenly attack structures within the body and cause more problems. With inflammatory arthritis, the immune system attacks the joints and can cause joint erosion It is important to seek help if you feel this may be applicable to you, as early intervention is important.

Infectious Arthritis

Infectious arthritis is caused by a virus or fungus entering the body and causing inflammation. Salmonella, food poisoning, certain sexually transmitted diseases, and hepatitis C are all infections that can cause joint pain and inflammation. While antibiotics typically cure this, if it is not treated early, chronic joint pain and infection can develop.

Metabolic Arthritis

When the metabolism malfunctions, uric acid can build up in the body and form crystals in the joint that cause severe joint pain. This is called a gout attack. Physical therapy can help mitigate and alleviate some of this pain, as well as medication and herbal supplements such as tart cherry extract.
