How to Correct “Text Neck”

With increased time spent on our phones and laptops, many people are developing neck pain or bad posture, including forward-extending necks. To reduce pain and improve posture, here are a few exercises to incorporate for a few minutes into your daily routine.

Reverse Nod

This exercise counter-acts the forward-leaning neck.

Sit at your desk and relax your shoulders. Look up at the ceiling.

Open your mouth and try to move your head even farther back.

Open and close your mouth, feeling a stretch in the front of your neck.

Cat/Cow

Get into a table-top position on your hands and knees with a neutral spine.

Take a deep inhale and lift the chin and the tailbone while arching the back and dropping the belly to the ground.

Take a deep exhale and round the spine, looking towards the ground and tucking the tailbone in.

Repeat.

Boat Pose

Lie flat on your stomach and place your chin on the floor.

Bend the knees and bring the heels close to the glutes.

Reach the arms back and grab the outer ankles.

As you inhale, lift the heels towards the ceiling so your chest and thighs lift off the ground.

Try to draw the shoulders back away from the neck.

Hold for 10 breaths.

Forward Fold

Stand with your feet hip-distance apart.

Hinging at the hips (bending the knees if it is more comfortable that way), reach as far as your can towards the ground and let the head and neck relax.

Hold for 5 breaths, then slowly roll up vertebrae by vertebrae until you are back at standing position.

Chin Tuck

Straighten the back and look straight ahead.

Pull the chin into the neck, making a double chin, and try to imagine pressing the back of the neck into the wall behind you.

Release the chin forward and relax.

Repeat
