Frequently Asked Questions about Plantar Fasciitis

What is plantar fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is a common source of foot and heel pain. The plantar fascia is a thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of your foot and connects your heel to your toes. This tissue is most commonly painful in the morning when you first walk after sleeping, but the pain should subside after a few steps. Any pain at all in this tissue is typically plantar fasciitis.

Runners, those who are overweight, and people who wear shoes without support have a higher risk of developing plantar fasciitis.

What are the symptoms of plantar fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is most commonly felt as a stabbing pain along the bottom of the foot near the heel. This pain is most prevalent during your first steps in the morning, after standing or sitting for long periods, or if you do not exercise or move regularly.

How is plantar fasciitis caused?

The plantar fascia is important for absorbing shock as your walk and supporting the arch of the foot. When the tension of this tissue becomes too high, small tears occur in the plantar fascia. These tears can grow larger over time and inflame the tissue, causing chronic pain. If you regularly alter your gait to accommodate pain in the plantar fascia, you may experience hip, knee, or back pain as well.

Who is at a higher risk for plantar fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is common in people of all ages, but it is most common for those between the ages of 40 and 60. People who are overweight, are constantly on their feet, or who perform activities that require a lot of stress on the heel are also at a higher risk. If you feel your walking mechanics may be contributing to your foot pain, it is important to have this evaluated by a physical therapist as soon as possible.
