Core Strengthening Exercises to Prevent Back Injury

Keeping strong lower core muscles, including the muscles around your hips, butt, and lower abs, will help to prevent lower back pain and injury. While a physical therapist will assign exercises specifically designed for your condition and goals, at-home exercises can help reduce your symptoms and improve strength. Consider the following at-home options:

Partial Crunches

To perform this exercise, lie on your back on the floor with your knees bent, and your feet pressed firmly on the ground. Intertwine your fingers behind your head or cross your arms over your chest. Take a deep inhale, and as you exhale tighten your abdominal muscles and lift your shoulders off of the floor. Hold this lifted position for a count of 5 and lower. Repeat up to 10 times as able.

Wall Sits

Stand with your back facing a wall about 12 inches away. Lean your back against the wall and slowly bend your knees, letting your back slide down the wall until your knees are at a comfortable angle (between 45º and 90º). Hold this position for 5 to 20 deep breaths as able. 

During the wall sit, try to press your lower back into the wall while you are holding this position. On each exhale, try to pull your belly button towards your spine. 

Leg Lifts

Lie on your back with your legs extended. Keeping your back flat on the ground and your arms by your side, lift your legs off of the ground until your toes are pointing towards the ceiling and your hips are at a 90º angle. Slowly lower the legs back to the ground and repeat 5 to 15 times. 

For an added challenge, hover the legs 6 inches above the ground before lifting them back up instead of resting the legs on the ground in between sets.
