Gaze stabilization: Frequently asked questions

What is gaze stabilization?

For patients who struggle with vertigo, it is common to feel persistent feelings of dizziness or like the room is spinning. When this occurs, it can be difficult to fix vision on a stationary object or feel grounded with your surroundings. Gaze stabilization is a type of therapeutic exercise to help patients train their eyes to fix on one object at a time to reduce nausea and dizziness.

Who benefits from gaze stabilization exercises?

Anyone with vision impairment may benefit from gaze stabilization exercises. Many patients who receive gaze stabilization therapy experience related symptoms due to conditions such as vestibular neuritis, central vestibular disorders, and acoustic neuroma.

It is important to note that gaze stabilization exercises are not typically recommended for those suffering with Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPVV). Gaze stabilization is also not typically recommended as the best treatment for vertigo associated with temporary conditions such as migraines. If you have questions about whether gaze stabilization exercises might benefit your condition, it is best to consult with a physical therapist to receive tailored recommendations for your needs.

What are gaze stabilization exercises?

Your physical therapist will typically recommend the right exercises for your condition. However, some common examples of gaze stabilization exercises include the following:

  • Focus on a letter at eye-level, such as the letter “A” in a sign
  • Focus on an object in front of you while moving the head side to side. Start slow and gradually increase the speed. If you get nauseous or dizzy, take a break.
  • Focus on an object in front of you while moving the head up and down in a nodding motion. Start slow and gradually increase the speed. If you get nauseous or dizzy, take a break.

When performing gaze stabilization exercises, you want to perform the exercise until you experience mild discomfort. You can start with only a few seconds, and gradually build up to a minute or more. Start by repeating the exercise up to 5 times per day to help the brain adapt to the movement. You can also perform these exercises seated before gradually working up to performing them while standing.
