Common spinal surgeries
Physical therapy can be a great tool for patients to reduce the recovery time of their surgery, boost results, and sustain long-term improvements. The spine provides stability and strength to our bodies as we move, and the vertebrae of our spine protect our spinal cord. When our vertebrae or spinal cord become damaged, it can greatly impact our ability to perform day-to-day operations.
Physical therapy or other rehabilitative therapy is often the first line of treatment for those with a spine injury. If these methods do not reduce symptoms to the desired level, surgery may be the next step. In the case of surgery, you will likely work with your physical therapist to improve muscle strength and tone prior to surgery and work to regain normal functioning after your procedure.
Several spinal surgeries are commonly seen in our clinic, such as:
Lumbar decompression surgery
In some cases, the spinal canal becomes narrowed over time. This is known as spinal stenosis. Spinal stenosis is often related to age, and this procedure is most common in older adults. In order to counteract this, the spinal surgeon will remove part of the lamina, any bone spurs, excess tissue, and any other obstruction creating pressure and pain in the back.
Spinal fusion
Spinal fusion surgery fuses two adjacent vertebrae together to reduce pain and friction between the surfaces. This may be done through screws and rods placed in the spine or may be performed through a bone graft.
Lumbar discectomy
If you have an injured disc in your back, you may be recommended to have a lumbar discectomy. This surgery can be performed through arthroscopic or open spine surgery. If the disc is herniated, an open procedure may be required. Otherwise, minimally invasive techniques are typically preferred when treating an injured spinal disc.
Herniated disc surgery
In extreme cases, a herniated disc may be removed and the two spinal discs on either side may be fused together. However, this leads to more extensive immobility of the spine than other procedures and is only recommended after careful consideration with a highly experienced surgeon.
