How to Start a New Sport
Many of us played sports when we were younger, either competitively or just for fun with local friends. As we get older, it can feel harder to return to sports we love or figure out where to start to try a new one!
Whether you played sports before or are completely new, there are a few tips that can help you figure out how to start.
- Think of the Type of Physical Activity You Like. You don’t have to have played competitively or on a team to think about sports you enjoy. Think back to gym class, or even work events you’ve been part of. Did you particularly like training for that company 5k? Or what about the community kickball tournament? Do you feel more comfortable throwing or kicking? Or maybe sports that don’t require a ball, like rock climbing or swimming? There are many options, try to think of groupings or general characteristics of what you do and don’t like.
- Watch Sports and Read the Sports News. If you aren’t sure what type of sports you would like, try tuning in to some new sporting events! What type of news do you find most interesting? Is it the details about the latest martial arts match? Or who’s winning the latest soccer tournament? Try going to a few different sporting events in person and see which event you are most interested in the actual sport.
- Search Local Teams. Community centers, Facebook groups, and local gyms are all great places to join a beginners league and try out some different things. Search terms like “Ultimate frisbee pick-up league in *insert city*” can be a great google or Facebook search to find ways to join in. If you are nervous, try to identify the person in charge and shoot them an email or message. They should be happy you are interested and provide you with all the details to feel confident trying something new!
- Give it time. You might not like the first sporting event you go to or the first league you try. That’s okay! Chalk it up to a new experience and try to identify what you did or did not like about it. Over time and with a few of these experiences you will narrow down on what is right for you.
