What Physical Therapists Do

Physical therapists help people with orthopedic conditions, such as low back pain or osteoporosis; joint and soft tissue injuries, such as fractures and dislocations; neurologic conditions, such as stroke, traumatic brain injury, or Parkinson’s disease; connective tissue injuries, such as burns or wounds; cardiopulmonary and circulatory conditions, such as congestive heart failure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease; and workplace injuries, such as repetitive stress disorders and sports injuries.

How Telehealth Physical Therapy is Different

“Telehealth physical therapy,” which is also called “virtual physical therapy,” refers to physical therapy that is provided through audio-video chat on a device equipped with a camera and a working microphone, such as a desktop, laptop, smartphone or tablet, instead of in person.

You may wonder how physical therapy can take place virtually when it typically requires touching, stretching, manipulating, and putting pressure on the joints and muscles.

Telehealth physical therapy sessions at Twin Boro Physical Therapy provide you with one-to-one, real-time contact and feedback for your individualized treatment. Just like in-clinic care, we’ll combine your virtual visits with an exercise program and other recommendations for your ongoing care between sessions.

Each patient’s visit will be different because each program is individualized, however; most telehealth visits will last for approximately 30min. This may be modified based on your symptoms and the goals for treatment.

Tips for Your Telemedicine Physical Therapy Sessions

  • Prior to your first telehealth visit, your therapist will send you an email with instructions on setting up your computer equipment.
  • Find a quiet room with clear floor space for exercise, preferably a room with a door to minimize interruptions. An exercise or yoga mat may be useful for floor exercises.
  • A comfortable, well-lit space will ensure you have room to move around so you can make the most of your physical therapy session. Good lighting will ensure a quality picture.
  • Make sure you have a stable internet connection.
  • It will be easier for you if you can keep your hands free to exercise. Look for a stand for your smartphone, tablet or laptop. This will allow you to exercise in front of your camera hands-free.
  • Wear comfortable close that allow you to move easily without binding or constricting you.
  • Have exercise equipment on hand that you may already use in your treatment (foam roll, resistive bands, weights, exercise ball, etc.). Your physical therapist will discuss this with you for upcoming sessions.
