TMJ Disorder: Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

What Is TMJ Disorder?

TMJ disorder (Temporomandibular joint dysfunction) is a disorder that affects the bones and muscles of the jaw. This condition is often caused by misalignment within the ligaments, joints, and muscles of the jaw. This can cause difficulty and pain talking, eating, yawning, and generally moving the jaw.

What causes TMJ Disorder?

There are many causes of TMJ disorder, but the most common include:

  • Complications from dental surgery
  • Jaw surgery
  • Breathing tube insertion
  • Infection
  • Clenching the teeth
  • Grinding the teeth
  • Autoimmune disease

What are the symptoms of TMJ Disorder?

The most common symptoms of TMJ disorder include:

  • Pain in the jaw
  • Jaw soreness
  • Vertigo
  • Neck pain
  • Head or shoulder pain
  • Shoulder tightness
  • Headaches
  • Migraines
  • Neck muscle tension
  • Head tension
  • Worn down teeth
  • Cold-sensitive teeth
  • Pain behind the eyes
  • Tingling in the fingers

What type of lifestyle modifications reduce TMJ pain?

In addition to practicing therapeutic exercises as directed by your physical therapist, simple lifestyle modifications can make a big difference when it comes to managing TMJ pain. If you notice yourself clenching your teeth frequently, consider wearing a mouth guard or other preventative device when sleeping or relaxing to help realign your jaw and prevent tooth grinding. Warm towels, icing, and acupuncture have also been shown to help relieve TMJ pain.

For some patients, reducing habits such as chewing gum, biting nails, eating hard foods, and biting your lip can help to reduce TMJ pain.

In some cases, corticosteroid injections can be beneficial to reduce TMJ pain when noninvasive treatments prove to be ineffective. In rare cases, surgery may be considered, but there is limited literature on the efficacy of this treatment.
