Ways to Correct Bad Posture at Home

As the work-from-home era continues, many of us are spending more time than ever in from of a screen. What’s worse—many of us are working slumped on a couch or with our computers on our lap and craning our neck downwards. But never fear, we’ve compiled a few of our favorite, simple at-home exercises to relieve tension in the neck and help correct bad posture.

  1. Neck straightening: Sit upright and look straight ahead. Gently tuck the chin into the neck and try to imagine you are pressing your neck to the wall behind you. Lower the shoulder and focus on elongating the spine. Hold 10 seconds and then relax. Repeat 5 times.
  1. Thumbs-Up: Sit upright and extend your arms in a T-position. Bend both elbows to a 90-degree angle, keeping your entire arm parallel to the floor. With your arms in this position, pull the elbows backward, trying to press your shoulder blades together. Make a thumbs up with your hands and rotate your arms while keeping the 90-degree elbow angle and shoulder blades squeezed together. The thumbs should move up and down, creating a vertical line as your arms rotate. Make 15 rotations.
  1. Lying stretch: Grab a large water bottle or yoga block. Lie on your back on the ground and place the item under your upper back where the shoulder blades are. Relax the head and neck downwards. Take 10 deep breaths, letting the back, head, and neck relax while stretching over the water bottle or yoga block.
