Hands-On Physical Therapy Techniques
At Twin Boro Physical Therapy, one of the benefits you will have is a one-on-one pairing with your physical therapist. This allows for integrating treatments that require hands-on attention from your physical therapists. This is especially important when treating musculoskeletal injury or dysfunction, as manual therapy techniques can significantly improve mobility.
There are several modalities of treatment that will be combined to provide you with the best recovery experience. Depending on your rehabilitation goals, you physical therapist will work with you to determine the best course of action. This might include joint mobilization, massage, kinesiology taping, and more.
Joint mobilization
Joint mobilization is done through passive movements of the body guided by your physical therapist. By moving the joint of the body in specific ways, your physical therapist can target areas of stiffness, pain, and inflammation while improving movement function.
Your physical therapist will not only move joints in relation to their “hinging” movements but also examine how your joints glide and align. This helps to identify any areas of concern and identify where appropriate pressure or directed force may need to be placed.
In some cases, your physical therapist will also teach you how to perform joint mobilization at-home. In these cases, you will work with your physical therapist to create a plan to manage your condition outside of the clinic and further improve results.
Therapeutic massage
Therapeutic massage is a great way to reduce inflammation, decrease tightness, improve circulation, and reduce pain. Your physical therapist will discuss with you the different types of massage techniques and how each may benefit the injured area.
Kinesiology taping
K-tape, or kinesiology taping, is another common way that your physical therapist may help to improve the healing process. This type of taping is often used to reduce bruising, reduce swelling, inhibit muscle movements, and provide pain relief. When kinesiology taping is applied, your physical therapist will place kinesiology tape in a specific location on the skin to apply pressure or improve alignment in a certain area. K-tape can generally be kept on for a few days at a time.
