What are gliding exercises?
Tendon adhesions can be caused by many things, such as trauma, surgery, and overuse. Tendon adhesions lead to several symptoms, often including pain and difficulty with movement. To prevent or reduce the symptoms associated with tendon adhesions, tendon gliding exercises are often recommended by physical therapists. These exercises reduce inflammation, swelling, and increase the range of motion on the tendon.
Tendon adhesions in the hand are common and performing simple gliding exercises at home can help to alleviate discomfort and act as a preventative measure. While we always recommend speaking with a physical therapist before integrating new rehabilitative movements into your plan to ensure, these gliding exercises are gentle and safe for most patients.
Before beginning movements, apply heat to the hand and wrist for 10-15 minutes to warm up the area. Afterward, apply a cold pack for 20 minutes after the exercise to reduce any swelling.
To get started integrating gliding exercises into your routine, consider the following exercises:
Medial Nerve Glide
Follow these steps:
- Make a fist with your affected hand
- Extend the fingers, keeping the thumb alongside the fingers.
- Bend the hand backward toward your arm
- Keeping the hand pulled backward, extend the thumb away from the fingers
- Rotate the forearm so your palm is upwards
- Use the other hand to pull the thumb backward for a more intense stretch
- Hold the stretch for 15 seconds
- Repeat 10-15 times daily
Tendon Glides, Pt 1
Follow these steps:
- Hold the hand in front of you with all fingers straight
- Curl the fingers to create a hook shape with the hand
- Hold for 5 seconds
- Curl the fingers into the fist
- Hold for 5 seconds
- Slowly uncurl the fingers
- Repeat sets of 10-15 repetitions daily
Tendon Glides, Pt 2
- Hold the hand in front of you with all fingers straight
- Keeping the fingers together and straight, bend them to make a 90 degree angle with the palm so your hand creates a table top shape
- Hold for 5 seconds
- Bend the fingers the rest of the way to meet the base of the palm or as far as you are able
- Hold for 5 seconds
- Slowly straighten the hand
- Repeat sets of 10-15 repetitions daily
