Thumb Joints

When it comes to certified hand therapy, understanding the joints of the fingers are important to identify the origin of symptoms and create an understanding of what is happening in the joints during our movements.

The joints of our thumbs include three types of joints, known as the interphalangeal joint (IP), metacarpophalangeal joint (MP), and carpometacarpal joint (CMC). Each joint moves in a distinct way and is responsible for a set of functions of our hands and fingers. Let’s dive in.

Interphalangeal Joint (IP)

The thumb is the only digit that only has two bones, so it only has one joint. This joint is known as the interphalangeal (IP) joint and is most similar to the distal interphalangeal (DIP) joint of the fingers. To identify your IP joint, look at the area of your thumb right below where your fingernail starts. This provides your thumb the ability to bend and straighten, making it possible for you to grasp items.

Metacarpophalangeal Joint (MP)

The metacarpophalangeal joint (MP) is where the metacarpal (hand bone) connects with the phalanges (finger bones). Each finger bone is called a phalanx. MP joints are responsible for your ability to grip and pinch items, allowing your fingers to bend and straighten. This joint allows for your thumb to move inwards and outwards and can be identified as the joint that is located where your thumb connects with the palm.

Carpometacarpal Joint (CMC)

The last joint is the CMC, which gives your thumb the ability to move into and away from your palm, bend and extend, and have the largest range of motion. This is the joint that connects the thumb with the wrist, and is one of the most common areas where the hand and wrist develop arthritis.
