Metacarpophalangeal Joint (MCP)/Interphalangeal Joint (IP) Joint Distractions                       The metacarpophalangeal joints (MCP) and interphalangeal joints (IP) are two of the joints in the fingers responsible for bending and straightening the fingers. This is important for fine motor skills and is critical in many daily tasks. When these joints become compressed and cartilage begins to wear down, the fingers can become increasingly stiff and unable to move quickly or with accuracy.

Joint distraction is a passive manual therapy technique that is applied on joints of the hand. This type of manual therapy should only be applied by a certified hand therapist after a comprehensive assessment of the area is performed. One the therapist determines that this is an appropriate and beneficial therapy to perform on the patient. It is often combined with an active rehabilitation plan to encourage long-term and sustained benefits of the joint distraction therapy. The main indications of the need for this type of therapy include stiffness (or hypomobility) of the finger joints.

In order to perform joint distraction of the MCP and IP joints, the therapist will support the forearm of the patient and grip the proximal bone of the joint being mobilized. They will then use their other hand to grip the distal bone and create slight flexion of the joint. Following this, they will create slight pressure to distract the joint and create space.

MCP/IP Dorsal or Palmar Glides

To promote further distraction of these joints, the certified therapist may incorporate MCP/IP Dorsal or Palmar Glides. These help to promote palmar or dorsal flexion and extension and continue to alleviate pressure within the joint.

At Twin Boro Physical Therapy, we pair our certified hand therapists one-on-one with patients in order to encourage the use of manual therapy techniques. Our expert therapists have years of experience helping patients find relief and long-term healing from conditions of the hand and employ state-of-the-art methods to produce the best outcomes.
