Joint Distraction – What Is It?

Joint distraction is a recent innovation in certified hand therapy used to treat painful osteoarthritis of the hands.

This type of therapy uses the natural healing process of the body to repair damaged cartilage and restore comfortable and fluid joint movement. Joint distraction is a minimally invasive surgery and involves gently separating the bones of the joint to create space. This relieves pressure on the joint for a period of time to allow for cartilage to naturally recover and rebuild.

In recent studies, joint distraction has proven to be extremely effective in reducing osteoarthritis pain and even preventing the need for future surgeries. In some cases, joint distraction has been shown to provide pain relief for over five years following the surgery.

While surgery is an effective method to alleviate pressure on the joints, there are also at-home joint distraction stretches for more readily available relief. These can be done for the fingers or for the wrist and are guided by a physical therapist.

In general, recovery time from surgery varies by patient but occurs within 2-3 months after surgery. Your surgeon and certified hand therapist will work with you to develop a rehabilitation plan to create the best outcomes and help you return fully to the activities you love. You will also receive education on how to best maintain results and prevent future injury.
